What is Frozen Shoulder?

September 28, 2016 by Dr. Terry Buisman, PT

With a name like “frozen shoulder” some Minnesota patients may assume the condition is caused by too much outdoor activity during our cold winter months. But frozen shoulder doesn’t actually have to do with temperature at all. Frozen in this sense refers to immobility of the shoulder. This article is all about frozen shoulder – its causes, symptoms, and treatment options (with a particular emphasis on physical therapy).

Frozen Shoulder treatment

Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder (also referred to as “adhesive capsulitis” in the medical world) is a relatively common condition in which the patient experiences pain and stiffness in the shoulder. The condition occurs when the shoulder capsule containing the bones, ligaments, and tendons of the shoulder tightens and restricts movement in the area.

Post-surgical patients who have just undergone a procedure that restricts shoulder movement are especially susceptible to frozen shoulder. This makes it doubly important to work with a physical therapist both before and after your procedure. Patients who have diabetes are also at an increased risk of frozen shoulder.

Here are some of the common symptoms that may indicate a diagnosis of frozen shoulder:

  • Pain in the shoulder
  • Stiffness or loss of range-of-motion in the shoulder

These symptoms typically begin very mild, and gradually get worse over time. Treating frozen shoulder can include physical therapy, injections, pain medications, and surgery (used only in rare cases). The most common and effective treatment method is a strong physical therapy routine.
