5 Ways To Make Fitness A Priority

January 16, 2023 by Dr. Andy Masis, PT

We all would like to be a little healthier, but becoming a healthier version of ourselves doesn’t happen by accident. We typically have to go out of our way and break our normal routines in order to become more physically fit. Making the conscious choice to seek out exercise and fitness more often isn’t always easy, but it can be a little easier if you take some simple steps to prioritize exercise. In today’s blog, we share five ways you can make it easier to prioritize your fitness routine.

You don’t need to completely overhaul your daily routine in order to prioritize fitness, you just need to plan ahead and make a few small adjustments to things you’re already doing. Here are five ways you can prioritize your fitness routine.

1. Work Out While Watching Television

If we have to make the choice between going to the gym or relaxing and watching a little TV, it’s easy to put your fitness on the backburner. However, you can get the best of both worlds. Look up an abdominal routine or invest in some small weights so that you can do an arm and leg workout while you’re watching television. Most television shows are about 30 minutes in length, which is a great length for an exercise routine. Instead of choosing one or the other, prioritize fitness by working out while you watch television.

2. Always Be Ready

It’s a good idea to keep some workout clothes in your car or in a drawer at your office so that you can exercise whenever you find time. If you get out of work early or you have some time before you have to pick up your kids from soccer practice, you can squeeze in a workout or a short run when the opportunity presents itself. It’s easier to find time to workout if you’re always ready when the moment arises.

3. Write It Down

Research shows that we are more likely to follow through with our goals if we write them down and place them in an area that we’ll see every day. Whether that means you’re writing it on the calendar or placing it on a sticky note on the fridge, write down that you’re going to exercise for 30 minutes and then cross that off the to-do list once you’ve accomplished it. Write your goals down, and it will be easier to hold yourself accountable.

4. Find A Few New Ways To Move More

Even if you can’t always find time to exercise, there are always ways to move more throughout the day. Find a few ways that you can move more throughout the course of the day. You can:

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator at the office
  • Park farther away so that you need to walk more to get to your destination
  • Walk around while taking phone calls or during work breaks
  • Walk your dog every day

5. Pay For A Gym Membership

Nobody wants to waste money on a gym membership, but you’re not wasting it if you make it a point to regularly go to the gym. See what gyms are in your area and pay for a one-month or three-month membership. Now that you’re paying for access, you may find that it’s easier to go to the gym because you don’t want your money to go to waste. Instead of buying equipment to exercise at home, pay for a monthly membership and get access to a wealth of machines and equipment so that you can find an exercise routine that you enjoy.

If you’re still having trouble prioritizing exercise or finding a routine that suits your needs, consider connecting with a physical therapist. We can help develop a routine to your specific needs and goals. For more information, or for help from our team give us a call today at (612) 339-2041.
