5 Ways To Increase Your Motivation For Physical Therapy

July 5, 2021 by Dr. Andy Masis, PT

We’ve all been in situations where we’ve had to dig deep to find motivation to do something that we didn’t want to do. Whether it was getting up before the sun and going for a run or ordering a salad instead of the alfredo, it’s not always easy to push yourself to make a better choice for your health. As physical therapists, we understand that completing your physical therapy routine may be something you sometimes struggle to find the motivation to do, but it’s important that you try to find this motivation so that you can make the fullest recovery possible.

It’s easier said than done to find ways to motivate yourself, but it’s certainly not impossible. In today’s blog, we share a few tips for helping to motivate yourself to complete your physical therapy routine.

Staying Motivated With Physical Therapy

Regardless of whether you’re a self-starter or you sometimes need a little extra motivation to get things done, there are steps you can take to make it easier to find that motivating drive. Here’s how we’ve found that clients can help improve their motivation to complete their therapy exercises.

  1. Focus On What You Want To Be Able To Do Again – Whenever you’re questioning whether you should follow through with your rehab program, really stop and think about all the things you’re currently unable to do that you want to be able to do again. Maybe that’s playing soccer at a high level, or just being able to bend over and play with the grandchildren without pain. If you skip physical therapy sessions, you’re putting this at risk by reducing your likelihood of a full recovery. Stay motivated by thinking about all the fun things or daily tasks you’ll be able to do again once you’re recovered.
  2. Stay Educated – If you have questions or concerns about any aspect of your injury, make sure you ask questions of your physical therapist. Maybe you’re not as motivated as you could be because you simply don’t understand the full benefits of your program or how certain exercises are targeting specific parts of your body. Feel free to ask why you’re doing certain exercises or what you can do when you’re not at PT to help your body heal. The more you know, the more motivated you’ll be to follow through with your exercises.
  3. You Only Get One Body – We’re not trying to scare you into completing your PT routine, but at the same time, it’s important to remember that you only get one body. Taking care of your health isn’t like taking care of your vehicle, because you can’t just change out the oil or brakes when things start to wear down. You need to strengthen and care for the parts you have, and you can best do that with physical therapy after an injury or surgery. Find motivation by focusing on working to improve the only body you have.
  4. Do It For Your Loved Ones – If you can’t find motivation to complete physical therapy for your own good, consider those that are close to you. They don’t want to see you in pain. They are doing better when you’re happier and healthier, and physical therapy can help you achieve that. Be healthier and stronger for your kids, your spouse, your friends or your co-workers, and they’ll be better off for it too.
  5. Find The Right Physical Therapist – Finally, if you’re struggling to find motivation to get through your physical therapy sessions, it may be time to consider switching physical therapists. Your PT should be a constant motivator who drives you to want to finish your exercise as opposed to being a reason why you’re considering skipping a session. If you want to find a PT who will help you find that inner motivation, look no further than the talented team at OrthoRehab Specialists.
