Treating Pelvic Floor Problems With Physical Therapy

January 15, 2020 by Dr. Andy Masis, PT

Your pelvis plays a crucial role in supporting your upper body and helping you move, but over the years things can start to break down and pain can set in. We have a number of therapists who specialize in what’s known as pelvic floor therapy, which is a program designed to treat issues located in the pelvic floor region. This area contains your pelvic floor muscles, which help to support nearby organs and play a role in bodily functions like bowel movements, bladder control and even sexual function. Below, we explain how our therapists can help you develop a pelvic floor routine to reduce discomfort and improve function in the region.

Developing A Pelvic Floor Therapy Routine

Pelvic floor physical therapy may be designed to treat a wide range of issues. From chronic pelvic pain to difficulty urinating or sexual performance issues, many problems can be treated with a comprehensive pelvic floor therapy routine. Here’s how a physical therapist can help:

  • Strength Training Exercises – Many issues may stem from weakened pelvic floor muscles, which can atrophy as we get older or be weakened from events like childbirth. Learning how to contract and relax your pelvic floor muscles can help strengthen these muscles and their supportive soft tissues, which can, in turn, reduce pain or dysfunction.
  • Patient Education – Many patients find it easier to manage their discomfort or dysfunction once they learn more about their pelvic floor system and how the muscles, tissues and organs work together to function properly. Our therapists can explain how certain habits or activities can help or hinder your quest for symptom reduction.
  • Manual Therapy – Our therapists can use hands-on techniques to help stretch muscle groups and naturally improve things that may be causing your pelvic pain, like posture problems, poor blood circulation or joint mobility issues.
  • Pelvic Floor Biofeedback – We have analytic tools that can help diagnose your hip dysfunction or find out if your gait is affecting the health of your pelvic floor. These tools can help us view your pelvic floor in real time to determine which exercises and stretching techniques would best help your issue.

By using a comprehensive approach to help limit pain and improve function in the pelvic floor, we’ve helped countless patients regain control over important aspects of their life. Whether you’re dealing with incontinence issues, sexual dysfunction or just chronic pelvic pain, reach out to the team at OrthoRehab Specialists to learn how we can help get you back on the path to full health.
