Physical Therapy Tips for Bone Health

November 26, 2018 by Dr. Andy Masis, PT

As the human body ages, our bones begin to lose their density, which can lead to an increased risk of fracture and other issues. In this physical therapy education article, we are going to offer up some tips for improving your bone health.

Physical Therapy Bone Health

Calcium, Calcium, Calcium!

Consuming calcium is a great way to improve the strength and density of your bones. Make sure you’re getting enough calcium by eating dairy products, fish, dark green vegetables, almonds, and other calcium-rich foods. If you’re not getting enough calcium from your diet, try calcium supplements to offset the difference. Check with your doctor to see how much calcium is recommended for your age and specific situation.

Cut Down on Smoking and Drinking

Smoking and Drinking excessively can negatively impact your bone health and lead to increased degradation over time. Quit smoking and only drink in moderation to curtail these effects.

Weight-Bearing Exercise

Exercise is another excellent way to improve your bone health. Weight-bearing exercises like running, tennis, basketball, or dancing are all great for building bone density. If you are already struggling with osteoporosis, be sure to check with your doctor about what type of exercises they recommend for you so you don’t overdo it!
