Plantar Fasciitis Pain? Here are Your Treatment Options

October 8, 2018 by Dr. Andy Masis, PT

Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition caused by an inflammation of the plantar fascia (the band of tissue that runs from the heel to the toes). When the plantar fascia becomes inflamed patients often experience sharp pain in the heel or bottom of the foot. Thankfully, there are options available for patients to treat this condition. In this physical therapy education article, we are going to dive into the various treatment options for those suffering from plantar fasciitis and related pain.

Plantar Fasciitis Pain

Physical Therapy

For many patients, physical therapy is the best option for treatment. Rehabilitation addresses the underlying cause of the plantar fasciitis pain and offers a non-invasive solution. It’s a best practice to try physical therapy first before moving on to other treatment options.

Orthotics

Orthotic shoe inserts can help mitigate the symptoms of plantar fasciitis. Orthotics, however, often only provide short-term relief for plantar fascia patients.

Surgery

Surgery for plantar fasciitis is typically a last resort, only to be considered when all conservative options have been explored. If you have already tried physical therapy, orthotics, and other conservative treatment options, plantar fascia surgery may be your best option. You should consult with your physical therapist as well as an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon to discuss your options.
