How Parkinson’s can Impact Movement

August 13, 2018 by Dr. Andy Masis, PT

Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the central nervous system that can cause a wide range of symptoms that make it difficult to perform routine daily activities. In this physical therapy education article, we are going to talk about how Parkinson’s disease can impact your mobility and how physical therapy can help reduce the symptoms.

Physical Therapy Parkinsons

Parkinson’s & Mobility

Parkinson’s disease can present with a wide range of symptoms. Here are a few ways in which Parkinson’s disease can negatively impact your mobility:

  • Tremors
  • Rigidity
  • Dystonia
  • Freezing
  • Drooling

Each patient experiences Parkinson’s differently. Some may have very mild symptoms, while others can find it difficult to engage in their normal daily routine. Whatever the case, there are ways to manage these symptoms.

How Physical Therapy can Help

The goal of physical therapy is to increase your mobility and range-of-motion – among other things. That goes for patients recovering from injuries and surgeries, as well as those dealing with conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. A skilled physical therapist can work with you to determine the extent of your symptoms and condition. Using the information gathered, they can then develop a physical therapy program (consisting of exercise, stretches, and other modalities) that are geared to address your specific needs.
