Is My Physical Therapy Recovery Normal?

March 20, 2017 by Dr. Andy Masis, PT

Many patients who have just had surgery or sustained an injury wonder if their recovery is “normal.” Because every patient is different, it can be difficult to discuss what a normal recovery is in a broad sense. However, there are a few benchmarks and signs that can help you determine whether or not your recovery is normal or not. That’s what we’ll be discussing in this physical therapy education article.

Physical Therapy Recovery

What is a “Normal” Recovery?

It’s worth noting that every patient is different. Two patients who have undergone the same exact surgical procedure may have vastly different recovery periods. What’s “normal” for one patient may not be for another. The most important thing is to consider the unique circumstances surrounding each individual patient’s situation when determining what is normal and what is not.

All that being said, there are some broader signs that can help differentiate between a normal and abnormal recovery. A mild to moderate amount of pain is normal during recovery as your body heals and gets used to its changes. However, if you are in extreme pain or pain that doesn’t improve at all for several weeks or months, something might be wrong.

Talk to Your Physical Therapist

If you are undergoing a physical therapy program after an injury or surgical procedure, your physical therapist will monitor your progress closely to ensure that everything progresses normally. Don’t be afraid to ask your therapist questions about your recovery. If you are concerned that you’re not making enough progress, or that your recovery is not “normal” – talk with your physical therapist. They will be able to examine your unique situation and let you know how things are going. If there is an issue with your recovery progression, they will be able to address it head on and make recommendations for improvement.
