Spondylolysis – Causes, Symptoms & Physical Therapy

February 27, 2017 by Dr. Andy Masis, PT

Low back pain can be the result of a whole host of injuries and conditions. Here we’d like to focus on one in particular – spondylolysis. This physical therapy education article is focused entirely on spondylolysis – its causes, symptoms, and treatment protocols.

Spondylolysis Physical Therapy

Spondylolysis Explained

Spondylolysis is a condition in which one or more vertebrae in the spine are cracked or fractured. It is most common in athletes who perform regular activities that put excess stress on the low back (gymnastics, weight-lifting, etc.).

Some of the potential symptoms that may indicate a spondylolysis diagnosis include:

  • Low back pain
  • Range-of-motion loss in the back
  • Tingling or numbness in the back or lower extremities
  • Difficulty sleeping

Treating Spondylolysis with Physical Therapy

Effectively treating spondylolysis requires a strategic approach. Low back pain can be caused by many different conditions and injuries – from slipped discs, to osteoarthritis – and each of these causes should be treated differently. Once your provider diagnoses you with spondylolysis, you can begin to form a plan for treatment. Most cases of spondylolysis can be successfully treated with conservative methods like physical therapy. A strategic physical therapy routine can help to decrease pain in the area, strengthen the surrounding muscles, and increase range-of-motion. Surgery is reserve for severe cases (particularly those in which the spinal nerves are endangered).
