Spinal Osteoarthritis Pain & Physical Therapy

February 21, 2017 by Dr. Andy Masis, PT

Spinal arthritis is one of the most common causes of back pain among patients over the age of 50. In this article, we are going to focus on spinal osteoarthritis – its causes, symptoms, and how it can be properly diagnosed and treated.

Spinal Osteoarthritis Physical Therapy

What is Spinal Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis of the spine is a condition in which the facet joints in the spine swell and inflame, causing pain and other issues. Here are some of the potential symptoms of spinal osteoarthritis:

  • Back and/or neck pain (that often worsens in the morning)
  • Stiffness or lack of mobility in the back
  • Tingling or numbness in the neck or back
  • Decreased range-of-motion, especially when bending or twisting

Spinal arthritis is most often caused by bodily wear-and-tear over time, which is why it is more common in elderly patients. However, it can impact patients of any age, especially if other factors (such as a spinal injury) are present.

How Physical Therapy Can Help

Unfortunately, there is no cure for spinal arthritis, but there are methods to reduce symptoms and slow its progression. Regular exercise is one of the most effective methods for treating the symptoms of spinal arthritis in the long-term. A physical therapist can help develop an exercise routine that will help deter the effects of arthritis in your situation. In severe cases (especially when spinal nerves are in danger), spine surgery may be required. Physical therapy is a commonplace prescription after such a procedure, and can significantly help boost recovery and pain control post-operatively.
