Treatment Options for Hip Mobility Issues

January 26, 2017 by Dr. Andy Masis, PT

We often don’t give our hips enough credit. Without our hips we wouldn’t be able to stand, sit, or balance. When hips break down, it can make even the most mundane activities difficult. In a previous article we offered some tips for dealing with hip pain. Here, we’re going to dig into the various factors that contribute to hip mobility issues, and how to best approach treating these symptoms.

Hip Mobility Physical Therapy

What Causes Hip Mobility Issues?

If you suffer from hip mobility issues it can be difficult to sit, stand, walk, run, bend, and lift – basically everything a person needs to be able to function normally on a daily basis. Here are some factors that can contribute to hip mobility issues:

  • Muscle strains and sprains
  • Arthritic conditions (such as Osteoarthritis) in the hips
  • Hip fractures

Treating Hip Immobility

After you have sought medical attention and received a diagnosis for what’s causing your hip mobility issues, you can look forward to treatment. There are many ways to improve hip mobility – all of which depend on the root cause. Certain injections and prescription medications may provide pain relief in the area, but physical therapy is typically the best way to increase your hip mobility over time. Whether your mobility issues are the result of an accident, surgical procedure, or an arthritic condition, a strategic physical rehabilitation program can help you regain mobility, range-of-motion, and functionality.

Hip mobility issues, if left unchecked can also contribute to a whole host of other painful issues throughout the body. For example, hip immobility often causes people to overcompensate with other parts of the body when exercising. This can cause pain and potential injury to the knees, low back, and other areas of the body.
