October is breast cancer awareness month. Because of great educational efforts over the past years, many people are aware of breast cancer and how to detect it. But educating people on breast cancer treatments and how to deal with those treatments is still an area that needs more work. If you’re a regular reader of our blog, you know that breast cancer rehabilitation is one of our specialties at OrthoRehab Specialists. In recognition of breast cancer awareness month, this October we’re going to be bringing you many educational articles on breast cancer, with a special focus on physical therapy.
What is Breast Cancer Awareness Month?
The ultimate goal of this annual campaign is simply to increase awareness of breast cancer – its causes, prevention, and treatment options. This month, foundations, groups, companies, and people like you come together to raise money and promote awareness of breast cancer.
Visit The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s website for educational articles, and fundraising opportunities.
What Does Physical Therapy Have to Do With Breast Cancer?
When most people think of physical therapy, they immediately picture knees, shoulders, arms, and legs. Breast cancer typically doesn’t even enter their minds. But the fact is that patients recovering from breast cancer surgery can benefit greatly from physical therapy. Women and men who have surgical procedures to remove cancerous tumors often experience pain and a decreased range-of-motion after surgery. Swelling, or lymphedema, may also be a risk. Working with a rehabilitation specialist before and after your procedure can significantly impact your functionality and pain levels as you recover.
OrthoRehab Specialists is a team of physical therapists dedicated to providing personalized care to patients throughout the Twin Cities. Breast cancer rehabilitation is just one of the many physical therapy areas in which we specialize. Our therapists offer direct access to physical therapy, and have been providing physical rehabilitation services in Minnesota for over twenty-five years. Contact our physical therapy clinics in Edina or Minneapolis to set up your appointment today!
