Returning to Work after an Injury with Physical Therapy

August 11, 2016 by Dr. Andy Masis, PT

Work can be difficult even when you’re feeling physically well. But when an injury strikes, your job can become even tougher. Whether you work in an office setting, or on a construction site, physical therapy is essential to recovering quickly after an injury. In this article, we are going to talk about how physical therapy can help you return to your job after you sustain an injury. To guide the discussion, we will focus on a few common groups of injuries.

knee physical therapy

Shoulder Rehab

Shoulder injuries may not affect an office worker all that much, but for manual labor jobs, it can be debilitating. Whether you’re operating power tools or lifting heavy objects, the shoulder is a widely used body part. When it’s injured, what were once routine tasks can become impossible. A physical rehab schedule can help you rebuild what was lost in your injury and get you back to performing your job duties pain free.

Hand, Wrist, & Carpal Tunnel Rehab

Even the least physically demanding jobs require you to use your hands in some way. Whether it’s using a computer or stocking items in a store – a hand/wrist injury or condition (such as carpal tunnel syndrome) can make work very difficult. Physical therapy can help return mobility to your hand and wrist, and (most importantly) decrease the pain associated with your injury.

Knee, Leg & Ankle Rehab

Many people take their legs, knees, and ankles for granted. Typically you don’t really think about how important they are until something goes wrong. Sprains, fractures, dislocations, and arthritic conditions of the leg, knee, and ankle can seriously hinder your ability to perform work tasks. Even driving to work can be a chore with an injury to the lower extremities. A physical therapy routine can make a huge difference in your recovery by reducing pain and increasing your overall range-of-motion.

At OrthoRehab, one of our specialties is helping patients return to work after an injury. When you set up an appointment, we partner with you to diagnose your injuries and come up with a physical therapy strategy designed specifically to suit your needs. Our twin cities physical therapists have been treating Minnesota patients for over 25 years. We offer direct access to physical therapy, as well as personalized care. Contact our Edina or Minneapolis clinics today to set up your appointment with one of our skilled Minnesota physical therapists and get back to work quickly after your injury.
