Summer is nearing an end, and that means kids are heading back to school. In this physical therapy education article, we are going to discuss some of the common reasons why kids experience pain as they return to the classroom in the fall.
Back Packs
Back packs are perhaps the most common culprit of school-related pain. Students have to carry back packs to and from (and around) school every day. These packs are often weighed down with heavy textbooks that can add significant poundage for a child, or teenager to carry. If your child complains of pain in their shoulders, neck, or back, this is often the first place to look.
Classroom Sitting
After running around all day every day in the summer, it can be hard to adjust to sitting in a classroom for five days a week. Keeping the body moving is one of the best ways to combat against various types of pain. Sitting for long periods of time – especially with poor posture – can lead to an increase in back and neck pain.
Sports & Activities
School sports, as well as other school-related physical activities (such as gym class) can also cause injuries that may result in pain.
