Overcoming Four Barriers To Activity With Physical Therapy

May 19, 2025 by Dr. Andy Masis, PT

We want you to live a long and active life, but we understand that it’s not always easy to be active. Despite our best efforts, we can encounter a number of obstacles to regular exercise and activity. Fortunately, connecting with a physical therapist can help you overcome all of these obstacles. In today’s blog, we discuss four barriers to activity that physical therapy can help you overcome.

Overcoming Challenges To Activity Through PT

If you’re struggling to remain active for one reason or another, know that a physical therapist is a great resource to help you overcome these challenges. Let’s take a closer look at four common obstacles that people say are keeping them from being active, and let’s discuss how we can help.

  1. Pain– Perhaps the most common complaint that we hear from people who are struggling to remain as active as they’d like is that persistent pain is slowing them down. Pain can have us shying away from activity, but oftentimes this sedentary lifestyle only beckons more pain. Instead, it’s important to confront pain head on so that you can overcome it and get back to all the normal physical activities that you love. Whatever pain issues you’re experiencing, we’re confident we can hone in on the underlying problem and help you develop an individualized program for ensuring you put pain behind you. Whether that’s through a strength training or mobility program, we’ll find the solution that’s right for you.
  2. Weight Issues– If your weight is holding you back, or it’s making you uncomfortable when you’re active, know that a PT can be a great resource. We can help you develop an exercise routine that feels less like a chore, and we can ensure you really understand the ins and outs of a healthy diet program. Your weight loss won’t happen overnight, but over time you’ll continue to make progress in your weight loss journey, and soon you’ll notice that it’s becoming easier to be active. Let us help you overcome new or persistent weight issues.
  3. Age-Related Issues– We all experience the effects of the aging process, but there are plenty of things you can do to slow down natural degeneration that can occur as you get older. We can help you develop a strength training program that keeps your joints healthy and wards off arthritic degeneration, we can improve your balance and gait so that it’s easier to remain upright on your feet, and we can even help target some of the cognitive changes that can serve to slow people down as they age, be it from conditions like Alzheimer’s, dementia or long-COVID.
  4. Headaches– Finally, many people suffer from chronic headaches or severe migraines that bring a halt to their daily pursuits. If you’re one of those people who has had to cancel plans or call into work because of a headache, let our physical therapy team go to work for you. We can conduct a physical exam and hone in on the underlying cause of your chronic headaches, and through posture improvements, targeted stretching or mobility training, we’re confident that we can reduce or even eliminate headache onset. Oftentimes a physical therapist is a much better long-term treatment option than medications when it comes to headache management.

Let us help you overcome any obstacles that are forcing you to be less active than you’d like. For more information on how we can help, or to set up your first appointment, give the team at OrthoRehab Specialists a call today at (612) 339-2041.
