While physical therapy is a highly effective treatment technique for patients looking to overcome injuries or recover following a surgical procedure, it’s not something that is going to solve the problem overnight. Many patients expect to follow a physical therapy program for weeks or months before they reach maximum physical function, so it’s not uncommon for patients to lose a little motivation along the way. In today’s blog, we share some tips for staying motivated during your PT program.
5 Tips For Staying Motivated During PT
It’s not always easy to stay motivated to complete your physical therapy exercises, but we promise it will be worth it by the end of your program. Here’s a look at some ways you can stay motivated during the grind.
- Focus On Your End Goals – Take a moment to picture yourself when you’ve completed your physical therapy program. Odds are you are in less discomfort and have more functional capabilities, which will allow you to return to all the activities you love. If you want to make enough progress to continue golfing without pain or to get back to other hobbies that you enjoy, let the desire to pursue these activities once again fuel you to perform your PT exercises. Really picture yourself at the end of your program and think about all the things you’ll be able to do again.
- Write Down Your Goals – Put pen to paper and write down some short- and long-term goals. Studies have found that people are more likely to stick to their exercise or PT goals if they write them down and put that list somewhere they see every day. These little goal reminders can help to motivate you to do your exercises each day.
- Make PT Your “Me Time” – Physical therapy exercises can oftentimes be performed from the comfort of your home or while you are waiting to pick your kid up from soccer practice. You can certainly multitask while you do your exercises, but some people find it easier to look forward to their PT program if they carve out some “me time” for their exercises. Find a quiet place where you are alone and can simply focus on your mental and physical health for 10-15 minutes.
- Celebrate Success – Your journey to your end goals will involve a lot of slow and steady progress along the way, and it’s important that you celebrate this progress. You are stronger today than you were a week ago because of the work you put in, so own your success and find ways to celebrate your hard work. Don’t let these celebrations deter you from your end goals, but if you acknowledge your hard work along the way, it will be easier to keep coming back and pushing yourself to make more progress.
- Check In With Your PT Regularly – Finally, it can be hard to stick with a PT program if you’re using an online program and never connecting with a specialist. The team at OrthoRehab Specialists will work closely with you and regularly adjust your PT program as needed so that it is still challenging and rewarding. We find that if a program has a perfect balance of these two factors, clients are more likely to stick with their program. Instead of going with a generic routine you find online, connect with a physical therapist and let them cultivate the perfect program that will keep you coming back for more.
