Physical therapy isn’t always the most fun way to spend your time, but if you do your exercises regularly, you can restore physical function and make it easier to do all of the fun physical activities that you enjoy. Physical therapy doesn’t have to be a drag, because there are a number of little ways that you can make your exercises a little more fun. Below, we explore some of the ways that you can make your PT exercises a little more enjoyable.
Make PT Fun Again
Your physical therapist may have a few tricks up their sleeve to help your in-clinic sessions feel a bit more engaging, but how can you make your home-based PT routine a little more fun? Here are some tips to try.
- Journal Your Personal Best – Journaling can be helpful throughout your rehabilitation journey because it can help you reflect on your progress and better understand how you are improving over time. You can also use a recovery journal to document and build on your personal record. Keep track of how many reps you do, how quickly you can finish your whole routine, or other personal accomplishments you are hitting along the way. Push yourself to beat your previous record, and you may find that you’re looking forward to attempting to break your personal record each day.
- Entertainment Options – Multitask during your home-based PT session and find ways to entertain yourself. Start a new television program, listen to a podcast or begin a new book on tape. You don’t just have to sit in a quiet room for 15 minutes finishing your PT routine. Find ways to keep your brain entertained or engaged, and PT won’t seem so monotonous.
- Phone A Friend – Use your PT time to catch up with a friend of some family members. Give them a call to catch up while you’re going through your 15-30 minute routine, and the time may end up flying by. Just make sure that you are still performing your exercises while you’re talking!
- Vary Your Routine – Odds are you aren’t going to do the exact same routine for several weeks until you’ve reached maximum functional improvement, and that’s a good thing. You’ll need to tweak your rehab plan as you progress in order to keep making strides in your recovery. Varying your PT routine also helps to keep things fresh and fun. Your PT routine can get boring if you are doing the same exercises over and over again, so vary your routine or reach out to your PT and see if you can have some different exercises added to your regimen so that you remain engaged throughout the process.
