According to a new study in The Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy (JNPT), early physical therapy can be beneficial for young patients with concussions. Physical Therapy After a Concussion
The study examined 120 adolescent patients and how the timing of physical therapy impacted symptoms after a concussion injury. Patients were given a physical therapy program consisting of exercise, stretching, strengthening exercises, cervical spine manual therapy, and vestibular rehabilitation therapy.
“Multimodal PT interventions administered by licensed physical therapists may be feasible and safe even within the first few weeks after injury to help facilitate prompt recovery and mitigate the onset of secondary effects from delayed treatment,” according to the authors of the study.
