In a New York Times article, Gretchen Reynolds writes about the amount of exercise we truly need to stay healthy. Some key findings include:
- According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week is the ideal amount of physical activity for those physically capable.
- Exercise scientists recommend breaking these 150 minutes into 30-minute sessions five times per week.
- Moderate exercise can be anything that increases your breathing and heart rate, and requires some exertion. For example, walking fast, doing water aerobics, or riding a bike.
- No matter how you choose to accumulate your 150 minutes, this amount of physical activity will have many benefits on your overall health and wellness
How to Stay Motivated During Exercise
In another New York Times article, Christie Aschwanden discusses several tricks to help people stay motivated to exercise. Here are a few of her suggestions:
- Change your perspective on exercise. Instead of viewing exercise as another task on your to-do list, view this time as a fun recess.
- Participate in activities you actually enjoy in an inviting environment. This could be playing a sport, dancing, hiking outside, or even CrossFit.
- Create an incentive to enjoy after or during your physical exercise.
- Make exercise a priority, and incorporate time in your schedule to do so.
- Get support from friends and workout buddies to hold you accountable.
- Anticipate the benefits of exercise as a way to manage your moods and take a break.
