We all want to remain physically fit long into our wonder years, but that doesn’t happen by accident. It takes work, smart decision making and a willingness to make a commitment to your health. As you get older, it becomes a little tougher to stay physically fit and ward off pain that can come with natural degeneration. Our physical therapy team understands the stressors and changes that can cause us to develop pain or underlying health conditions as we get older, and we want to pass on some advice. In today’s blog, we share a few tips for healthy aging and preventing health problems as you get older.
How To Age Slowly
Obviously we can’t make time slow down, but we can slow down the effects aging has on our body if we are mindful about everyday choices. Here’s a look at a few ways to stay physically fit as you get older.
- Exercise – The number one thing we tell all our clients is that exercise is beneficial no matter your age. The type of exercise may vary based on your physical capabilities and limitations, but exercise builds muscles, reinforces range of motion and improves circulation throughout your body. Whether it involves swimming two miles a day or simply walking around your block in the morning and afternoon, find ways to stay active.
- Continue to Build Muscle – Research has shown that you can still develop muscle mass and improve physical function well into your 80s and beyond, so keep finding ways to test and improve your muscles. Water-based yoga or walking on a treadmill are great ways to build muscle endurance and strength if a traditional workout in the weight room isn’t your scene.
