Shoulder pain comes in many forms and can be caused by a variety of different factors. In this physical therapy education article, we are going to discuss how to identify and treat 4 common causes of shoulder pain.
Shoulder Dislocation
When your shoulder is rotated to far or pulled back with too much force, your arm can pop out of the shoulder socket. This injury is common in sports, slip and fall incidents, and car accidents. Treatment for shoulder dislocation involves popping the shoulder back into place and allowing the shoulder time to heal. Physical therapy can be beneficial in returning full range-of-motion after such an injury.
Rotator Cuff Injuries
Rotator cuff tears and other related injuries can cause significant shoulder pain and movement issues. These injuries typically result from slip and fall injuries, or due to bodily wear and tear over time.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that can impact any joint in the body – including the shoulder. Essentially, this condition causes the cartilage between the bones to break down, resulting in the bones rubbing against one another. Osteoarthritis is typically caused by normal wear and tear as the body ages. While there is no cure, physical therapy and other treatments can help reduce associated pain.
Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder is a condition in which the shoulder joint mobility is significantly decreased due to the buildup of abnormal bands of tissue. Physical therapy is the best way to treat frozen shoulder because it is effective and non-invasive.
