We are breathing all the time. Whether you are sitting, standing, working, working out, or sleeping – your body is constantly exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide.
The Breathing Process
Breathing is a complex process, but it’s not just about air exchange. The movements and mechanics of breathing are important in helping maintain good posture and pressure balance within the body.
One of the main muscles of breathing is the diaphragm. It is a dome shaped muscle that separates the abdominal and chest cavities. The diaphragm muscle attaches to your lower ribs and directly on the vertebra of the lumbar spine. When you inhale the diaphragm lowers downward to a flatter position and when you exhale the diaphragm rises up back to its domed position. Because the diaphragm muscle attaches onto the ribs and spine, poor breathing patterns can affect your ease of mobility throughout daily activities.
