It’s breast cancer awareness month, and all month we’re bringing you educational articles on breast cancer – particularly as it relates to physical therapy. In this article, we are going to discuss the various causes and risk factors associated with breast cancer in both males and females.
What Causes Breast Cancer?
As is the case with most cancers, we still do not know exactly what causes breast cancer. That being said, we do know some of the risk factors that can increase a person’s chance of developing breast cancer. Some risk factors for breast cancer include:
- Family history of breast cancer
- Age – older women are more at risk than younger women
- Previously diagnosed cancer in the breasts or ovaries
These risk factors can give an indication of a person’s likelihood of developing breast cancer. However, a person who shows none of these risk factors can also develop breast cancer, so they are not absolute indicators.
Treatment Options & Physical Therapy
Treating breast cancer often involves some sort of surgical procedure to remove the tumor and/or surrounding breast tissue. Such a procedure can lead to pain, discomfort, and a decreased range of motion in the arm and chest area. This is where physical therapy can be a massive help. Working with a qualified breast cancer physical therapist before your procedure can help you prepare for the surgical trauma. After your procedure, a strategic physical therapy routine can help decrease your pain and keep you mobile, and decrease your risk of developing lymphedema.
