When you’re going in for any new medical treatment, it can be scary simply because you don’t know what to expect. This article is for patients who are preparing for their first physical therapy appointment. We will walk through what to expect and what to bring to the clinic for your first appointment.
Paperwork
Depending on what you have already submitted, you will likely have to fill out some standard paperwork when you arrive at your appointment. Come prepared with your insurance information, and basic medical history. Your physical therapist will likely also want to examine any previous medical records (especially if you have recently had surgery or had an injury). If your physician or surgeon has referred you to physical therapy, they will likely coordinate the sending of these records. Every physical therapy clinic has different guidelines and forms, so it’s always a good idea to check out their website before your appointment and see if there are any forms you need to prepare before your appointment.
Meeting Your Physical Therapist
Once you’ve completed your paperwork, the next order of business is one of the most important – getting to know your new physical therapist. Before you get into any actual exercises, your therapist will have a brief conversation with you about your medical situation, your limitations, and your goals. This conversation is essential because it sets the state for a successful relationship with your PT, which requires clear communication from both parties.
Planning & Exercises
After your rehabilitation specialist has gotten to know you and your situation a little bit, they will work with you to create a plan of action. This can include the specific exercises you’re going to be doing according to a schedule, any future appointments, and your goals. You will also likely be doing some initial exercises and stretches so make sure you wear appropriate attire!
